2017: Make History

2017 is just around the corner.

I know you may not be someone who likes to make a New Year's plan.... because the truth is that we're not always in control! (For many, we're just ready for 2016 to be over!)

However, here are four simple questions to ask as you prepare to close 2016 and enter into 2017.

Questions lead to answers...  Actions lead to success...

What do you want?

I can share from experience that you may be chasing goals because you think you "should." Don't chase goals based off of your childhood, education, work experience, advertising or other factors.

What matters now? Search deep. Today.

Knowing is half the battle.
— G.I. Joe

Action Step: I want you to be a digital Dorothy. Search your heart and brain with courage. Download these ideas, too. Here are some options of where to store them...

  • index cards

  • post-it notes

  • notes on phone

Marie Forleo taught me an often overlooked part of goal setting is examining why.

Knowing what you want really is one-half of the battle. You will encounter some great obstacles along your journey.

Examining why a goal matters to you (writing it down as well) will give you the emotional fuel and work ethic you need to actually make it happen!

Discipline is remembering what you want.
— David Campbell

Action Step: Next to each idea or goal, write down why it's important to you. What would it mean to you if you accomplished this in 2017?

Take a look at your list. Beyond knowing what you want (clarity) and why (emotional fuel)... the most important step is taking action.

Can we agree that success is never permanent? I know you will get to where you want to be... but then you may lose that status or realize it's not your final destination. Therefore... don't focus on an outcome! Focus on progress/actions.

I want you to pick one goal to focus on this year. This is the hard part, but you can put the rest safely away to pick up later!

Returning to our Wizard of Oz analogy, you've just articulated what your "emerald city" is. Now, it's time to create your own yellow brick road!

Because when and where things happen are not always in our control, I want you to examine how you will work towards this "emerald city" and/or who can help you there faster!

Unfortunately... you have to lay many of your own yellow bricks. Articulate what those first few yellow bricks are in terms of action steps. Along the way, don't be afraid to bring along a who for your journey. There's no way you can know or do everything on your own! You need that voice teacher, acting coach, photographer, etcetera to help you get results more quickly. If I can help you in your journey... I would be greatly honored to work with you.

Action Step: Schedule "yellow brick" appointments on your calendar for daily or weekly action. Seek help when needed.

Now, use when and where as a way of looking back.

In my last post (linked below), we learned it's important to occassionally look around and look behind us. You can become so future focused that you loose sight of the blessings of the present and the achievements of your past. Notice how far you've come... it will fuel you further!

In addition to daily "yellow brick" appointments in your calendar for action steps, I want you to set monthly check ins for measurements. Track your money, social media metrics, website analytics... or whatever's important to your journey to the "emerald city" or "home."

Action Step: Set monthly meetings for measurements.

As we're seeing in America, one person can change the world...

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
